Writing

The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards Thought for the Writer's Day: Gifts for Writers #23

Smart writers need to hit the job search sites regularly. There ARE jobs out there, but they don't necessarily come along frequently unless you live close to a big city.

You have to be very persistent, and it's easy for a writer to become disheartened. When people feel like that, they lose hope but you can help. See if this doesn't strike you as the most unique of gifts. Give a copy of a book, maybe a classic, maybe a bestseller. In the title page, write a promise that you'll search Monster, Dice, Indeed, JobCentral, and CareerBuilder every week in 2007 for keywords such as "writer," "editor," "copywriter," and anything else you can think of that might be appropriate.

My wife does this for me. At least three times each week, I wake up to a browserful of writing opportunities.

Quote for the Writer's Day:

"Put your desk in the corner and every time you sit down there to write, remind yourself why it isn't in the middle of the room. Life isn't a support system for art, it's the other way around." From On Writing by Stephen King.
