Writing
Thought for the Writer's Day: Gifts
for Writers #31
It would be very nice to think that you could write
a book and suddenly become immensely popular and wealthy.
Alas, for most of us, writing doesn't work like that.
The secret to success as a writer, in my opinion, is
simply to plug away, picking up work as and when it
comes along. I write during the day for other people
and I write in the evening on my own account. I haven't
done too badly; I own comfortable houses in Britain
and the U.S., and some very nice cars, yet most people,
even people interested in books, won't have heard of
me.
So our final gift in this series of 31 gifts for the
holiday season is one that you can give to yourself.
Look for a day job as a writer that'll support your
evening job as a writer. Monster
carries all sorts of writing and editing opportunities.
Some of the most promising of them lie in the field
of technical writing. The Nasdaq Composite Index (a
good measure of the health of technology firms) gained
about 9.5 percent during 2006, climbing back to levels
we haven't seen since February 2001. Tech firms are
facing a new year with refreshed confidence and newly
approved budgets, and they're hiring.
 | The Key to Success: Write something every day, even if it's just 200 words. Read something every day, even if it's just ten pages of a book.
