Writing

Thought for the Writer's Day: New Year's
Resolutions for Writers
1. Get my work published in a magazine again. I haven't
pitched anything to a magazine editor for a long time.
2. Read a new magazine every month. The first rule
of writing is to know your market.
3. Write a new novel this year. I've taken a couple
of years away from novels and I need to get back into
practice.
4. Double my web audience. People have to want what
a writer offers. If the audience won't grow, I'm not
doing my job.
5. Cut my TV viewing hours in half. This will be difficult;
I'm already a selective TV viewer. You should be, too.
In
On Writing
by Stephen King I found some very good advice: "TV...
really is about the last thing an aspiring writer needs."
6. Devote two hours every Sunday to uninterrupted reading.
I think I can do this; it's just a question of time
management.
7. Join a writing group. I haven't attended a writing
group since about 1998. I miss it.
8. Make sure that I'm using my local public lending
library to the full. I'm spoilt. My library is within
walking distance.
9. Build a podcast studio and release one of my books
in audio form. I've been promising to do this for quite
a long time. I need to back up my claims.
10. Add a new revenue stream. I frequently write here
about the concept of multiple revenue streams. Use the
search box below if you'd like to learn more. All writers
need to develop revenue streams, but people new to writing
need especially to focus on this issue.
So, there you have it. I don't know if any of my resolutions
will do anyone else any good, but I think every writer
ought to spend a little time making a list of their
own. Just for reference, here's my 2006
list of New Year's Resolutions. How many would you
have chosen? How many would you have kept?
Happy New Year!
