Making Shapely Fiction by Jerome Stern Thought for the Writer's Day: How Long Should a Short Story Be?

How long should a short story be? Jerome Stern's excellent book, Making Shapely Fiction, contains some interesting comments about short stories. "Most short stories published today seem to run between 2,000 and 7,000 words. The longer the story, the more space it takes, and the more editors have to love it to make that committment."

This strikes me as sound advice, but there's more to it than that. In a sense, stories define their own length. How much can you fit into 1,000 words? Try it. Write a 1,000-word short story. It's harder than you think.

Help Someone Today, and it Won't Even Cost You a Penny:  American Invisible readers have helped to raise funds for more than 14,000 thousand free mammograms, after reader Nucklehead Ed drew our attention to this good cause. "Going here and clicking on the button once a day may help save a life. That's not too much to ask, is it?" Nope.
