Thought for the Writer's Day: How Can
I Make Money Writing for Magazines?
On the homepage of this site, I include a quote every
day. Today, for the first time, I'm going to use a quote
of my own. Around this time last year, I wrote:
"If you put in a stint as a magazine contributor,
you'll quickly find that writing is the easy part.
Finding something to write about is the hard part."
I other words, when you approach a magazine editor,
remember that you're selling ideas, not words. I put
myself through grad school by writing for magazines,
and came out without any debt, so I think I know a bit
about this subject.
If you're a beginner, understand that magazine editors
might be a lot more receptive to your approach than
you imagine. Just remember that they need to fill their
pages with new and interesting ideas.
Also, remember to stay humble. I'm pitching an idea
to a niche magazine in London right now. I've always
found much greater overall success pitching ideas to
small publishers than large ones.
