Writing

Thought for the Writer's Day: How
Can I Make Money as a Writer?
Anyone with a website is a writer and publisher nowadays.
Writers have a LOT more power than ever before. Up until
1995 or so, you could not expect to find a readership
unless you could attract a publisher or stump up the
cash to publish yourself. Now, with a Blogger
account, you can publish for free.
I don't think people have understood the extent of
this change yet. I'm pretty sure that publishers haven't
understood it. The next Joanne Rowling could get famous
from her basement. It really could be you.
So, how can you make money as a writer? Keep trying
ideas. I try lots and lots each year. Some work, more
don't, but that's fine. When it costs almost nothing
to try an idea (certainly much less than it costs to
hire a market research firm to test an idea), you're
free to do what you like.
I write fiction, I write about investment, I write
about NASA, I write about old, forgotten cult television
shows, I write about technology, I write for magazines.
Not all of these activities are moneyspinners, but they
don't all need to be. I still make a living.
