Writing

Thought for the Writer's Day: What's
the Best Market for a New Writer?
I picked up a book about writing yesterday, and found
it was really a book about writing for magazines. This
discovery saddened me. I've had a lot of fun writing
for magazines, but it's worth saying that the majority
of my income since I went to college has come from writing
elsewhere. We can't all target magazines; if we did,
most of us would starve.
Truth is, when someone asks me how to get a start,
magazines come to mind as an easy answer, but I think
most aspiring writers would do better by hitting Monster
and searching for "writer" and "writing."
I still think that writing for the web is a big opportunity
that has yet to be recognized. Be persistent, because
here-today, gone-tomorrow sites are unlikely to get
noticed. This site has been around, in one form or another,
since 2001. In that time, I've met a lot of people and
made a lot of contacts. I don't get paid by the page,
but then I don't want to. It's too limiting. If I wanted
to earn a fixed amount of money each hour, I could wash
cars or wait tables.
