Writing
Thought for the Writer's Day: When
Writer's Quit the Day Job
A few days ago, I mentioned
that I'm planning to submit a piece to
Writer's Digest
magazine, so I've been reading my April 2007 copy carefully.
The worst crime a magazine contributor can commit is
neglect; you should know the house style, know what
the magazine has recently published, and know what kind
of material it typically publishes.
Anyway, while I was reading, I can across this interesting
piece. On page 104, a successful writer argues that
keeping a day job is actually a good thing.
It's Kind of a Funny Story
author Ned Vizzini suggests that he couldn't write without
an anchor to windward, a day job as a teacher at a New
York public school.
I find this piece encouraging. While many aspiring
writers are dreaming of the moment when they can quit
the day job, here's an argument that goes the other
way.
