Writing
Thought for the Writer's Day: Learning
to Write
If you want to learn to write better, just go out and
meet someone new. I'm serious. Yesterday, for reasons
too complicated to go into, I went to a hobby shop to
buy a rather expensive model train set. This kind of
thing is entirely outside my experience so I threw myself
on the mercy of the nearest employee the store had to
offer.
He was very helpful and knowledgeable indeed, and it
struck me that a great many people might have thought
him a nerd, but he wasn't. He was a married guy (unless
the ring was a ruse) who was evidently fascinated by
history, engineering, electronics, crafts, and the social
progress of us all, from Victorian times to the present
day.
As I keep saying, go out and do something new; it'll
make you a better writer and give you fresh ideas. It
doesn't have to be something remarkable, just something
you've never done before.
