Writing

On Writing by Stephen King Thought for the Writer's Day: How Do You Sell Your Writing?

I've always felt that selling my writing was the hardest part of the job. I've had more than my share of successes, but I still think that selling writing is a hard thing to do.

But I've been helping a friend apply for sales jobs, and it strikes me that selling writing is a darn sight easier than selling financial services or selling pharmaceuticals.

If you want to boost your confidence, go to Monster.com and search for a few of those jobs, and go through the application process. I quickly learned how tough sales people are expected to be.

In comparison, selling a book to a publisher is easy. I'm not saying it's easy to close a book deal. Not at all. But the process of approaching a publisher and pitching an idea is far, far easier than persuading a total stranger to leave their existing financial advisor and come to me, a total stranger who has no experience and no track record.

Think about that next time your writer's nerve gives out.
