Writing

Micro Fiction edited by Jerome SternThought for the Writer's Day: Why Should I Publish Online?

I was a teenager when I first found people who self published their own material. I desperately wanted to try it for myself but I never had the resources. I do now. Now, I could publish a book at Xlibris or Lulu, and I've already published two books online. I can create my own merchandise at CafePress, too. Life is very good.

But anyone else can do the same, which prompts two interesting thoughts:

  1. My work is likely to be lost in the noise
  2. It doesn't feel so good now that everyone is in on the act

Getting lost in the noise is a challenge that we all have to overcome. It's a genuine problem, but that's no excuse; focus on quality and be persistent. You ought to get noticed eventually, and you shouldn't be discouraged.

But the fact that anyone else can self publish, that shouldn't be a bummer. It shouldn't affect your thinking. As a kid I wanted to publish my own work. Now, I can. That's all that matters.
