Writing
Thought for the Writer's Day: How Do I Get
a Writing Job?
Landing yourself a writing job is
easier than you think. Trust me, I've done it many times.
To begin, trawl through your favorite website, such
as Monster, Dice,
or CareerBuilder.
I happen to like Monster, but your mileage might vary.
In most locations, writing and editing jobs won't come
up all that often, so be patient. You might have to
wait, but I think you will find jobs if you wait long
enough.
Now here's the important part. Read the posting carefully.
Start your resume with a heading such as "Profile"
and follow it with five bullet points. What goes into
each of those bullets? The answer is easy; whatever
the hirer says they want. Just make sure that those
bullets match the five key requirements posted in the
ad.
It really is that simple and it works magnificently.
Of course, you mustn't lie. You mustn't say you have
experience that you don't have. But you absolutely must
stress, as early as possible, that you're the right
person for the job.
I'll let you into a secret. Hiring managers don't read
resumes all the way through. There just isn't time.
So, if you want to be a writer, get out there, be bold,
and grab a job. They are there.
