She wasn't sure it was wise but Sophie decided to try
again. "Bill, about dating girls."
"Subject closed," he snapped. "At least
until I've found that girl."
"Found her? You plan to find her?!!"
"Why not?"
"Do you have any idea how many people live in
the tri-state area?"
"Well she found us."
"Yes, I wonder how she managed that?" she
asked, her voice heavy with sarcasm.
"I'll find her."
"How?"
"I'm a wizard!"
This was true. She knew what her brother was capable
of. Against a very strong witch it would probably not
be enough, but on average, she found, people were average.
Even witches.
"OK, maybe you will find her. Maybe. But I'm worried
about you. What if you don't? What if she doesn't want
to be found? You'll be so disappointed. Or what if you
find her and the two of you don't hit it off."
"We will."
"You can't say that."
"We will."
She wrapped her arm around his. "Bill. Just think
about regular girls, will you? Just think."
"No."
"Why not?"
"I don't like them."
"You don't like them? Regular girls are great."
"They're boring. Just look around you. They're?"
He searched for the right word. "Boring."
The streets were still teaming with people. Sophie
looked around herself and saw people of all sizes and
sexes. Some were plain, some striking. Walking towards
her was a tall slim girl. Maybe she would be twenty
next birthday.
"What about her?" Sophie said, pointing her
finger almost into the girl's face. "She's cute."
"Why thank you," said the girl with a gracious
smile. "Yoga."
"Too skinny."
Sophie sighed. "Well, her then. She's cute too."
Sophie pointed at another girl. She had a green streak
in her hair.
"Fuck you," the girl snapped.
Sophie shrugged. "You probably just need to get
to know her."
"You know you're losing this argument," Bill
warned. They stopped on the sidewalk outside the restaurant.
"Well help me out here. There's nothing wrong
with regular people. You should try regular people sometime.
Most of the people out there are regular people."
"Sophie, I want a witch. That's all. I just want
a witch."
She could see his depression building again, and it
made her sad. She kissed him on the cheek. "I know,"
she said softly. "Come on. Let's eat. Tomorrow
I'll help you find her."
He gave her a weak smile. A short flight of steps lead
up to the entrance. Bill followed his sister, captivated
by the sight of her hips swaying elegantly as she climbed.
Forbidden thoughts jumped and tumbled through his mind
like bunny rabbits playing on a lawn.
