Sue visited the museum as soon as it opened. She needed
to snoop around. When she arrived back at the office
James and Kath were in conference. Outside it was a
warm and sunny morning but inside the atmosphere was
gloomy.
"Did you find anything out?" Kath asked.
She shook her head. "Nothing we didn't already
know. The Mexican artifacts are gone. That's it. How
did your meeting with the journalist go?"
Kath sighed. "Well, he was kind of cryptic. I
got the impression that he thinks there's more to the
story than we know but I don't think he has any useful
information."
"There's a mystery but no one knows what it is.
Great."
Sue was fizzing with frustration and excitement but
there was no way to say what she wanted to in front
of Kath. She had to pretend to be as depressed as they
were.
"So what happens next?" James asked.
"Maybe we should decide what to do about the severance
first." She turned to Kath. "Does that lawyer
friend still owe you a favor?"
"Yes. Why?"
"She could put pressure on Doberman."
"It's worth a try," Kath agreed.
"Could you handle that today while James and I
go back to the museum?"
The ice just here was thin. They knew that Kath would
report back to Debbie if they asked for time alone.
Kath considered the idea and her brow began to furrow.
"Why would you want to go to the museum again?"
she asked. "You just got back from there."
"I thought I might be able to bribe someone to
tell us more. A janitor or something. But I didn't have
any money."
Kath turned this over in her mind very slowly. "You
be good," she said to James, meaningfully.
A few minutes later, when they were alone, Sue handed
the video camera to James.
"Did you get anything?" he asked, almost
as excited as she was.
"Gold dust," Sue said with a happy smile.
She told him what she had filmed.
"What do we do?"
"That's easy. Send him a copy of the tape. Give
him a day or two to think it over. Then pay him a visit."
"Think it'll work?"
Sue wasn't sure. Doberman was not a predictable person.
"I did think of a way to apply some more pressure
if we need to."
There was a delicious look of pure evil on her face
that James liked a lot. "What?"
"Oh," she teased. "Let's just send the
tape and see if that does the trick before we get nasty.
Do you know how to copy a tape?"
It was strange that someone who knew how to sneak into
someone's bedroom and film them did not know how to
copy a video tape.
"I think we'd need a VCR for that," James
hinted.
"Oh, good. I hoped we did."
"Why?"
She retrieved half a dozen video cassettes from her
bag and handed them to him.
"What are these?" Each one bore a date and
time, scribbled with a thick black marker. They had
names that James did not recognize.
"Tapes from the security cameras in the museum.
I thought they might be worth a look."
His mouth opened but he could find no words.
"Don't worry, I'll take them back."
