"Wish we had a TV," Sue complained. "Can't
we go back to your house?"
"Oh, yes, Debbie would love that. 'Hi Honey. We
just came home to watch some stolen security tapes from
the museum.'"
"What's the big deal?"
"How do we explain how we got them?"
Sue sighed. "It's always going to be like this,
isn't it? We're always going to be trying to get Kath
out of the way or wondering how to explain something."
He nodded. "Unless we tell them about you."
"No!" Her eyes were suddenly open wide. He
could see white all the way around the pupils. "No.
I can't do that." She looked very frightened.
"That's OK. I won't ever tell them unless you
say it's OK. Understand?"
She nodded back.
"Maybe we could go with your story. Tell them
we bribed a janitor. Debbie would believe that. She'd
probably be mad at me for wasting the money and not
even wonder if the story is true."
"I wonder what it costs to buy a janitor."
"A hundred?"
"Do you have a hundred on you?"
"Think so."
"So the story holds up."
"Yeah, let's do that. Come on." He looked
at the pile of tapes wondering how many hours it would
take to see them all. "If we leave a note for Kath
she can join us later."
Sue glanced at her watch. "We should kill some
time first."
"Why?"
"Debbie and Kath are suspicious. We're supposed
to be going to the museum right now to collect the tapes
from a janitor and pay him off. If we did that we wouldn't
make it to back to Connecticut for another two hours."
"So we just sit here?"
Sue thought. "No. What if Kath comes back? We
ought to go someplace."
The frustration was suddenly too much for James. "This
is getting too damn hard to manage!"
"You could take me to brunch."
"What with? I just spent a hundred bucks on video
tape!"
