Ex-patriot Englishman living in coastal southern Connecticut.
His American wife Debbie, is a freelance comercial artist,
and they have a young son, Ben. Until 2002 he worked
for a startup in midtown Manhattan but the firm closed
when the funding dried up. Now runs a Broadway-based
detective agency, American Invisible Inc., with partners
Kath and Sue. He first met Sue when she inadvertently
knocked him unconscious during a high speed pursuit.
Sue
Graduate student, currently working towards her Doctor
of Philosophy degree (in Philosophy). She's remarkably
bad at the things most people find easy and remarkably
good at the things they find difficult, such as flying
and turning invisible. She is a partner in American
Invisible Inc., and supplements her income by tutoring
children. Shares an apartment in Brooklyn with Sweet.
Sweet
Ghost, killed in an air conditioning accident while
walking home from a health food store. ("Makes
you think, doesn't it?") In life she toured with
a southern rock band, playing piano. Her real name is
Melissa, hence the nickname, and her errant husband
was The Rambling Man. She has a daughter, Feather, who
lives with grandparents in the Upper East Side. Shares
an apartment in Brooklyn with Sue.
Hamlet
Giant, taciturn, enigmatic database guru. Famous for
breaking the story that his boss, Peter Doberman, wears
Victoria's Secret underwear. He worked in Manhattan
with James and Kath, before they all lost their jobs.
Now he prospers at a downtown bank, while his former
coworkers struggle financially. He spends much of his
time in a strange, surreal dreamworld battling the forces
of evil, claiming to guard a mysterious portal to New
York City, and drinking British beer.
Ophelia
Petite girlfriend to Hamlet. So far she has only been
seen in the dreamworld that the characters visit.
Sophie Smith
Self-absorbed, nymphomaniac witch. Alongside brother
Bill, she appears in magic shows around the world. Not
many people realize the shows are so good because the
magic is real.
Bill Smith
Effete, self-absorbed wizard. Alongside sister Sophie,
he appears in magic shows around the world. Not many
people realize the shows are so good because the magic
is real. Bill's preoccupation is the purity of the bloodline.
Interbreeding with mortals over countless millennia
has rendered sorcerers almost extinct, and the remaining
practitioners are left with greatly reduced powers.
Thus he constantly searches for a wife. Unfortunately
the only witch he regularly encounters is his sister.
Splurgles
A family of evil lawyers living in the dreamworld. They
suffered heavy casualties in See-Through Sue and the
Naughty Dream.
Peter Doberman
Complex, challenging, cruel individual who ran the Manhattan
firm where James, Kath and Hamlet originally met. He
lives in luxury on the Upper West Side with his large,
demanding, domineering wife who constantly criticizes
him for failure and denies him sex, no matter how hard
he works nor how successful he becomes. Most recently
seen polluting the dreamworld with smoke-belching factories.
Kath
Partner in American Invisible, Inc. alongside James
and Sue. Best friend to Debbie, James' wife. She lost
her apartment in Connecticut when she lost her job,
and now she lives in Harlem on the charity of her brother.
Volunteers at a shelter for the homeless. Unaware that
Sue has superpowers.
Albert
Hamlet's pet elephant. Occasionally gets chatty, and
never, ever forgets anything.
