The Island of Lesbos, Aegean Sea
The next morning James woke with a start. Katie was
next to him, already awake, watching CNN with the sound
off. She turned to him and stroked his chest.
"Hiya," she said.
"Hello."
She traced a line down his cheek with her index finger.
"Is this the part where you freak out?"
"What?"
She propped herself on her elbow. "I've been with
married men a time or two. I know the deal."
James looked at the clock. Graceland would open in
a few minutes, and he was starving. "I don't get
it. What deal?"
"Married men freak out. They always freak out.
They hope and pray for a little variety and, when they
get it, they just plain freak out. And the more married
they are, the more they freak out."
"Well, I won't."
She pushed herself out of bed and moved to the fridge,
and poured two glasses of orange juice. She was naked,
and she looked wonderful. "You're very, very married.
Yesterday your middle name was 'Chastity'."
"Well, today I've changed it. Today, it's bloody
well 'Reality'."
She handed him a glass. "So this wasn't a one-night
stand?"
He shook his head. "You were afraid that's how
it would turn out?"
"Thank God, yes."
He set the glass down on the nightstand and clasped
her hand. "I'm in love with you," he told
her. "I can't promise you everything, but until
we get out of here, I'm yours."
She thought about his words carefully. "That's
a deal I can live with," she answered.
