Coco Interlude IV

Teri and Oliver were seated around the kitchen table trying to make a decision. If Eve and Greg couldn't come to the party who would fill their place? At this late notice it was almost embarrassing to offer an invitation.

"Could we just make it a foursome?" he suggested.

"No. We need six."

"We could ask Alec," he suggested. "But you never know who he'll bring."

"He's fun."

Fun was not quite the right word. "If you say so."

"Oh, come on. I like Alec."

Oliver picked up the phone and dialed Alec's number. If Eve were still expected it would not do to ask Alec but she had canceled.

In Alec's apartment the telephone rang. He was about to leave but he stopped for a moment at the door to listen. His outgoing message was getting old. He needed to change it. "This is Alec. You know what to do. Jesus, do I leave instructions on my mailbox?"

Oliver waited for the beep.

"Hi. Alec. Oliver. We wondered if you'd like to come over for dinner tonight. Seven thirty. Let us know. Lynda's coming. Feel free to bring someone. Plenty of food. See you later."

Alec thought for a moment. He almost walked back to the phone but then decided against it, opened the door and left. Oliver put the phone back in its cradle.

"I wonder if he'll hear the message in time."

Teri had a strange look in her eyes. "Oh, I'm sure," she said.
