Lea peered through the hedge. "Police?" she asked.

"I think so."

"Were they spying on the mad scientist?"

"I think so," Michael said.

"Why?"

"Why not? We were!" The mystery was maddening. "I wonder who he is."

"That's easy," Lea said, much to his surprise. "My dad knew him years ago. His name's Professor Lloyd."

"You know him?"

"Not well, but I know who he is. He's kind of weird but he's nice really. He was kind to me once, when I was little."

"So on the whole you'd prefer not to see him get arrested?"

She nodded.

"Let's take a look in the lane. I wonder if there's a patrol car."

"If they're spying they won't have blue lights and sirens."

There was no police car in front of the Professor's house but they spotted one in a side street, parked in a dark corner with the engine off, a lone driver at the wheel. It was hard to know what they should do. They watched for a while but the rain was falling hard and they retreated to the shelter of an oak tree.

"OK," said Michael. "Let's think this through. Most likely the neighbours called the Police. The mad professor doesn't know about it. The police aren't knocking on the front door, they're peeking through windows, so this is an undercover operation."

Lea interrupted him. "So the big question is what will the Police do next? If they just keep snooping on him he'll never know. He'll keep on with the experiments and walk right into a trap."

Though neither of them had said so they were both intrigued by the experiments. They would never pursue a career in science but the subject did start to get interesting when it became as pyrotechnic as this.

"I'd like to know what he's doing in there."

"We could ask him."

Michael laughed. "I don't think that would work."

Lea laughed too but then suddenly she stopped. An idea struck her. "You know, I think it just might. Tomorrow evening, right after school, we knock on the front door and tell him about the Police. He has to let us in."
