Coco Interlude V

Lynda loved to decorate. She had turned the apartment into a comfortable and welcoming place to relax alone or to entertain. There were no house rules at all. The focal point of the main room was a low square coffee table flanked by three couches. Jon stood more than 6 feet tall so she had chosen long deep couches that just invited you to lie down. Sometimes they lay together, other times they took a couch each, reading a book or watching television, talking only during the commercials.

They had passed a frantic day buying Christmas presents and now they were enjoying a well-deserved glass of wine. The clock chimed six times. Neither of them had expected to make it home so early and the chance to just lie and do nothing was delicious.

The phone rang. Lynda reached out a lazy arm to scoop up the receiver.

"Hello." She listened for a while and then said, "Can you hold? Let me ask Jon."

She put her palm over the mouthpiece. "It's Teri. Would we like dinner tonight?"

"Tonight!?" What sort of notice was that?

"Greg and Eve dropped out."

"Oh, that's flattering."

"Shhh."

"What time?" He was pretending to be affronted but really he was not.

"Seven."

"Seven!???"

She put the phone back to her ear. "Teri? We'd love to come. Thank you. See you later."

She hung up and tried to gather her thoughts. The evening had looked so tranquil just a moment early. "I'd better take the shower first. Can you iron my white blouse?"

"I don't know. What do I do?"

"It's just like a shirt. You know how to iron a shirt."

He was not convinced. "It has bulges!"

She looked down at her chest. "Not very big ones."

"OK, I'll try. Where are my keys?"

They had begun to panic.

"What wine shall we take?"

"What's the main course?"

"Have you seen my glasses?"

"Where's the shoe polish?"

"Do we have enough gas in the car?"
